How did you become a nanny?
My older sister (I am the middle child, with two sisters) was asked by our next door neighbour if she would babysit, she wasn’t interested so I said I would do it – I have been doing occasional babysitting ever since for various local families. Later on in my teens and early 20′s I helped with Cubs, Beavers and at a Playgroup and Crèche as I found that my college course in computing gave me quite a lot of free time. Upon leaving college I went into a computing job but after about 18 months I decided to go back to college to do a Nursery Nursing course whilst working in the computing job on a part-time basis. Became a qualified Nursery Nurse and at that time had changed part-time job and I ended up going full-time at that job which involved sales, marketing and computer support.
Redundancy is a funny thing. At the time you are not happy about being made redundant. However looking back I now see it as being a good thing. It gave me a financial cushion to enable me to consider working in childcare whilst knowing my mortgage would be paid for a good few months. I went into nursery work as a temp which involved going to various nurseries to cover often late notice staff absence. I got to see a lot of different nurseries, some which I liked, some which I didn’t like much and others which I would not go back to again. I got a job working for Ofsted (back then they were only regulating registered childcare in England) but left after around 6 months as I didn’t like the office politics or the job I was doing – it did though teach me about childcare legislation which is something I post about on sites like Mumsnet. Having left Ofsted, I went back to nursery temping and looked into nannying. I contacted various nanny agencies and one of them had a family on their books who was prepared to consider a male nanny. I have now worked for several families and am currently nannying for a family who have employed me now for over 3 years.
